Change of Address in Quebec: The Complete Checklist

Government and Official Address Changes

Start with the most important ones. Quebec has a convenient one-stop address change service through Service Québec that lets you update multiple government agencies at once. Visit clicSÉQUR online to change your address with the SAAQ, Revenu Québec, Régie de l'assurance maladie du Québec (RAMQ), and Elections Québec simultaneously.

For federal services, update your address with the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) through My Account. You should also notify Service Canada for Employment Insurance and CPP/QPP purposes. If you have a Canadian passport, update your address with IRCC.

Don't forget Elections Canada — your voter registration is tied to your address. You can update online at elections.ca. If you're not a Canadian citizen, update your address with Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) for your visa or permanent resident records.

Utilities and Essential Services

Contact Hydro-Québec to transfer your account to your new address or set up a new one. You can do this online, and it's best done 2–3 weeks before your move. If your old apartment had electric heating, make sure Hydro does a final reading so you're not billed for the next tenant's usage.

Transfer or set up internet and TV services. Vidéotron, Bell, and smaller providers like Fizz usually need 1–2 weeks' notice to schedule an installation at your new address. If possible, schedule installation for the day before your move so you have connectivity right away.

Update your address with Postes Canada mail forwarding. For about $100/year for an individual, Canada Post will redirect your mail to your new address for up to 12 months. This catches anything you might have missed. Set it up at canadapost.ca or at any post office.

Financial and Insurance Updates

Notify all your banks and credit unions: Desjardins, RBC, TD, BMO, National Bank, or wherever you bank. Update credit cards, lines of credit, and investment accounts. Most major banks let you do this through their app or online banking.

Your assurance habitation (home insurance) needs updating immediately — your premium may change based on your new location. A move from a low-risk ground-floor Brossard condo to a 3rd-floor Plateau walk-up may affect your rate. Contact Desjardins, Intact, or your provider as soon as you have your new address.

Update your car insurance as well. Your premium is partly based on where you park your vehicle. Moving from the suburbs to downtown Montreal (or vice versa) can significantly change your rate.

Subscriptions, Memberships, and Everything Else

Go through your email inbox and credit card statements to identify every subscription with your old address. Common ones people forget:

  • Amazon, online retailers — update shipping addresses
  • Gym memberships — you may want to transfer to a closer location
  • Doctor, dentist, pharmacy — update records or find new providers in your neighbourhood
  • Library card — Montreal's Bibliothèques de Montréal system covers all boroughs
  • Employer/HR department — for tax forms and payroll
  • Schools and daycare — especially important for CPE waitlists in Montreal

Finally, let friends and family know your new address. An old-fashioned "we've moved" card or a quick group text gets the job done. And if all this feels overwhelming, bookmark this page — our team at Up & Out created this list so you can check items off one by one without missing anything.
